Identify the assembly before adding openings
Not every roof has a conventional vented attic. Some roof assemblies are designed differently and should not be changed by simply adding vents. Start by asking which assembly your house has and whether the proposed roofing work affects that design.
In a conventional vented attic, outside air enters through lower intake openings and leaves through higher exhaust openings. The arrangement must fit the roof geometry and product requirements. A larger exhaust vent is not automatically an improvement if intake is restricted or the intended airflow path is interrupted.
Look for obstructions and competing causes
Insulation can obstruct intake paths if the assembly is not detailed to preserve them. Storage, alterations, or later remodeling can also change conditions. Ask the roofer to document accessible intake and exhaust features rather than relying on the number of visible vents alone.
Moisture or heat concerns may involve more than ventilation. Interior air leakage, exhaust ducts, insulation, plumbing, and roof leaks may need consideration. Condensation should not automatically be diagnosed as a roof leak, and a leak should not be dismissed as condensation without evidence. A useful assessment explains what was observed and what needs another trade’s attention.
Coordinate ventilation with a reroof
A replacement project is a good time to review ventilation because roof openings and ridge details may already be in the scope. Ask for a written description of the proposed intake and exhaust approach, including any work that requires access from inside the attic.
Confirm that roofers and insulation contractors understand each other’s work when both are involved. Keep the ventilation product details with your roof records. If the roof assembly has special requirements, ask who is responsible for confirming the design. More openings do not substitute for a coherent, appropriate system.
